Did you know that I am studying to become a certified aromatherapist? Well, I am! I have been using essential oils for many, many years, and, a few years ago, I decided to deepen my knowledge and became a student of aromatherapy.

In my aromatherapy course, we have been talking about digestion, which has definitely been a subject that has been important to me personally over the years! If you have ever experienced digestive distress, I suspect this subject might be important to you, too. There are many essential oils that help with digestion, but two that immediately come to mind are spearmint (Mentha spicata) and peppermint (Mentha piperita).

You may be wondering “Why would I need both? Why not just stick with the more ubiquitous peppermint?” Well, there are many reasons for this… “All of which I’ll tell you about RIGHT NOW!” (Just kidding, but if you know what movie this quote is from, let me know!)
Firstly, spearmint is much gentler than peppermint and is safe for all ages, whereas peppermint is not recommended for children younger than two. Additionally, spearmint may help to lower blood pressure, whereas peppermint is not recommended for those with high blood pressure as it may increase it further. Both oils are great for helping with most digestive issues, including nausea, motion sickness, excess gas, and stomachaches, but spearmint has a calming effect while peppermint may help the user stay alert.
These oils both have many other uses as well, some similar and some not. Have you used these oils? Which do you prefer?
